Many fans still point to Queen’s electrifying twenty one minute set at Live Aid in 1985 as the ultimate triumph. Freddie Mercury’s call and response with the Wembley crowd remains etched in collective memory as one of the greatest live performances ever staged.
Yet May has long identified a different occasion as the true summit of his career. In 2002 he performed God Save the Queen from the rooftops of Buckingham Palace during the Golden Jubilee celebrations known as the Party at the Palace. The idea began with organisers suggesting he walk through the state rooms, but he proposed instead playing from the battlements with an orchestra below.
He faced intense nerves while standing without a safety net before an estimated global audience of two hundred million. The national anthem had never been played live by Queen before, despite appearing as a studio coda years earlier. Technical hurdles included limited visibility of the conductor and potential interference from his amplifiers.
Roger Taylor supported the arrangement from below on timpani. May later described the experience as unmatched for the sheer management of fear, noting that everything depended on that opening moment. He returned two decades later for the Platinum Jubilee to perform We Will Rock You with Adam Lambert, yet it never equalled the personal satisfaction of the 2002 rooftop solo.
